Undergraduate Academic Progress

Summary
This policy describes institutional academic progress for undergraduate students, including satisfactory progress, probation, and academic bankruptcy. Academic Progress should not be confused with Satisfactory Academic Progress which ensures that students are meeting all of their educational requirements to remain eligible for federal financial assistance and are on target to graduate on time with a degree or certificate.

I. Satisfactory Progress

Undergraduate students who maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale at the end of each academic semester have maintained satisfactory institutional academic progress. It should be noted, however, that programmatic requirements for specified majors or scholarship requirements may mandate higher standards in order for students to remain in the program or to retain their scholarships. It is the responsibility of the students to be conversant with the academic standards for their major or scholarship renewal requirements. Information pertaining to an academic major is available through the academic dean or information pertaining to scholarships is available from the Financial Aid Office.

II. Probation

At the end of each semester the academic performance and records of students with academic deficiencies is reviewed. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 on a 4.00 scale will be placed on academic probation for one semester, excluding summer sessions. A student whose cumulative GPA has not been raised to 2.00 by the end of the probation semester will be asked to withdraw from the University.

A student suspended for academic reasons will be considered for readmission upon application to the appropriate office and with the approval of the Vice President for Academic Affairs after one academic year. A readmitted student is expected to show evidence of reasonable expectation of improved performance.

III. Academic Bankruptcy

A student’s GPA at Maryville may prevent him/her from continuing studies at the University and/or changing to another major. Upon recommendation of the appropriate dean, or applicable program director, and following two or more years of interrupted studies, the student may be accorded the opportunity to petition for exclusion of previous grades of “D” or “F” in computation of the GPA and the grade(s) of “D” from degree requirements. The student’s transcript will then carry this notation with the additional statement: “the adjusted earned credited are _____ and GPA is ______.”
